How It All Started

Apparently, we are getting close to understanding how universes are created. The idea hinges on the concept that gravity has negative energy that balances out the rest of the mass and energy of the universe. It also needs spontaneous fluctuations due to quantum effects. Stephen Hawking promoted this idea in his latest book. All we need is a particle accelerator a little bigger than the LHC to create a black hole, which theoretically allows a new universe to form. Don't worry about it destroying our universe; it will only expand within its own dimension and we won't ever see it. If we were a bit more advanced, we could even modify the physical properties of the universe to make sure it can allow life.They say there is no way to travel to these created universes, but who is to say an advanced civilization that knows how to modify the properties of this universe could not figure out a way to travel to it?

Which brings us to the implications of this universe-creating theory... are we living in a designer universe right now? The forces of the universe are so finely tuned to allow matter to form and life to thrive that some would think this kind of precision requires an intelligent force to create it. Others think we live in just one universe within an infinite number of universes, so of course we developed within the one that happened to support life. Whichever theory you believe in depends on whether you are an atheist or whether your world view allows for a more intelligent being, or God. Many even think that this designer universe concept proves that you don't need "God" to explain creation; you just need a more intelligent race of beings. 

It could also prove that science and religion are growing closer. The thought that we almost understand how a universe could be created is mind-boggling, and shows how far we have come in the past few decades. The Bible speaks of a separation of the wheat and chaff in the last days. One way this could happen is that as science progresses and can explain, theorize, or replicate the miracles in the scriptures, people will have to choose. Either God works through the laws of the universe that He created and we are learning some of those laws. Or science is showing that we don't need God to explain the world around us. Eventually there will be so much evidence, so much convergence of science and religion, that everyone will have to choose how they want to interpret it.
